Regeneration Project: Falmouth Docks

Working in conjunction with A&P Falmouth, part of the APCL Group, and Geotechnical Engineering Ltd, CMS GeoScience carried out a successful geotechnical survey within Falmouth Docks as part of the initial stages of a regeneration project. Our experienced geotechnical team were able to collect 26 vibrocores for archaeological and MMO analysis.

The operational site proved to be a challenging environment, with our surveyor identifying four positions sitting over an area of a previously dismantled and removed jetties. Had we deployed our 3.2 tonne vibrocore system, the debris from the jetties posed a potential high risk to people, the vessel and our equipment. Seawide Services carried out dive surveys in these positions to provide clearance and our team were able to successfully complete all the sample locations.

Our Mechanical Engineer, Jack Foll, was there to oversee operations and commented:

This project was a collective effort and saw us partnering with many specialists within the marine field. Generally, CMS GeoScience operates all over the country, and much further afield, but this contract was a great opportunity to work on an exciting maritime development much closer to home here in Falmouth.

The challenges associated with this project were demanding but proved to be an opportunity to put our robust and proven geotechnical systems to the test, resulting in a productive campaign for all involved.’

CMS GeoScience has over 30 years of experience in conducting geotechnical surveys in ports and harbours. Bringing together this knowledge, as well as drawing on the expertise of other industry talent, we have worked on many projects all over the UK and beyond, including MMO sampling for dredging developments, seabed strength assessment and contamination analysis. As has been demonstrated with this project, our systems and team can be deployed in challenging locations and we are always happy to work with you to find a solution for accessing restricted sites, be it smaller vessels, pontoons or quayside crane deployment.

We’d like to talk to you – please get in touch with either Ruth Russell or Ben Foll to see how CMS GeoScience Ltd can support your upcoming projects: survey@cms-geoscience.co.uk
